|Biography||Beria was a Georgian Bolshevik who became a close associate of Joseph Stalin in 1938.|
He was the head of the political police in Georgia when Stalin declared the end of the Great Purge in 1939. Yezhov, who had organised the purge, was executed, and Beria replaced him, becoming the head of the secret police and national security across the Soviet Union.
Beria was executed after Stalin's death.
