Born in Bangka-Belitung province on 5th February 1956, Yusril earned a Ph.D in law at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies, at the University of Science, Malaysia. Yusril, who is currently the chairman of the Islamist Crescent Star Party (PBB), started his career as a lecturer at the University of Indonesia's School of Law in 1984. Before taking a portfolio in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Cabinet, he had earlier served as a minister in the cabinets of former presidents Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri. In Melbourne last week1 Wahid described Yusril as being one of at least "six fundamentalists" or Islamists in the Yudhoyono cabinet. |
